was going to vomit and turned him on his side. Instead of vomit, however, froth, reddish in colour, began to pour from his mouth and nostrils, and he became cyanosed. The froth was cleared out of his mouth, but it refilled again immediately. We then drew him up the table and allowed his head to hangover the end, in order that the froth might run out, and his mouth was wiped out again and again. Artificial respiration was kept up all the time. The symptoms commenced about 11-40 (at which time six drains of chloroform had been used on the spongiopiline-cone inhaler). About 15 or 20 minutes past 12 he was conscious, able to talk and swallow, and the cyanosis had disappeared. He complained of very great thirst and a burn-
